NSW - St Vincent de Paul Society
On the New South Wales central coast, more than 100 volunteers from the Gosford region come together to make furniture and toys to raise funds for the good works of St Vincent de Paul. The trained volunteers create a range of furniture items such as tall boys, dresser drawers and children's toys. These workshops provide an opportunity to learn and create using the art of woodworking and furniture creation and restoration, in a social and friendly environment.
Many of the lovingly created and refurbished items, often made from recycled materials, are provided free to families that have little furniture and limited income. Some of the items are sold through Vinnie's Shops to help raise funds for the many charitable works undertaken by the St Vincent de Paul Society to assist the disadvantaged in the local community.
The $2,000 SUEZ community grant has enabled the workshop to continue to put waste to good use by purchasing much needed materials to produce high quality finishes to their designs. In particular, the funds will purchase a specialist spray paint booth giving the hand-created or restored items a professional furniture finish. This level of attention to detail provides the volunteers with a real sense of satisfaction that comes from producing a high quality product.
The St Vincent de Paul Society is a member and volunteer based organisation that has been assisting people experiencing disadvantage in New South Wales for more than 130 years. You can find out more about the services they offer as well as volunteering opportunities on their website.
