SUEZ Community Grants

Creating a sustainable future

QLD - Guide Dogs Queensland

The Trekker Breeze is an electronic, handheld talking GPS system designed for use by blind and low vision people.

With the $5,000 SITA community grant, Guide Dogs Queensland will conduct Trekker Breeze training classes for clients in 2014 and provide each client with their own Trekker Breeze, free of charge. This program will specifically support five clients in the region of Cairns, Queensland.

During the training classes, clients will learn how to use their Trekker Breeze to improve their travel and wayfinding skills; use with public transport in residential, business and CBD environs; navigate unfamiliar environments independently; cross complex street intersections; and explore mobility issues such as using it for directions, accessing local services, map reading, route planning and programming in favourite routes.

Chris Laine, CEO Guide Dogs Queensland, said, “This generous grant from SITA will allow us to purchase five Trekker Breeze units."

"These units come pre-programmed with an existing list of commercial points of interest such as cafes, shops and transportation options, allowing the user to feel more confident to navigate in an unfamiliar environment and also can be programmed on demand so users can find their favourite locations again."
